Sand Castle

Sand tufa is a very fragile form of tufa that exists on the shores of Mono Lake. The tufa is formed when calcium carbonate bubbles up through sand and hardens in the intricate forms you see here. The sand tufa is located on the south side of the lake.

Mono Lake is in the eastern Sierras (California) near Lee Vining.
